I had a solid week of training, and survived every tough workout that my coach threw at me. Some confidence is starting to return. But damn, I am so exhausted, mentally and physically.
Bonus this week: I did well on my three exams this week! Not easy in the midst of IM training!
Mon was a rest day, thank goodness! Justin and I were both exhausted from the long weekend of training. Tue AM, I had another "peak to peak" hill repeat run - this week, a total of 8 repeats (6 last week). It was a beautiful morning for a run, and I was really surprised at how good my legs felt! I didn't expect much going into the run, but my legs showed up and I had a really strong run! Those repeats are tough, but I was thrilled with my run. Later on Tue - 3 exams! 2 in A&P and 1 in Microbiology. Rough week of studying - glad to get through those!
Wed - my favorite swim workout, the hypoxic swim! Haha. Ugh. Nothing makes me hate swimming more than swimming and not breathing! Ouch. This swim was exhausting, but I made it through the whole set. My swim countdown is still on by the way. ;)
Fri - 4th of July!! This kicked off what looks to be like a HELL week of training. Taper before this weekend's Boulder Peak Tri? Nope! On Fri, I had a swim-run brick - 3500m continuous swimming (500 WU, 1000 Z2, 2000 Z3). Yup, still hate swimming. Still slower that I'd like to admit. But, I made it through the whole swim without stopping. I was happy with that at least. Then I was off for a 10mi brick run - 5mi Z2, 5mi Z3. Ran on the IM course again, since I swam at the 50m pool. Decent run, but I was struggling mentally because I was already thinking about my swim-run brick on Sat, which was even longer! It was a tough run but I did my best to push those last 5mi. I was completely spent by the end.
On Sat, I had a 2000m swim (Z4 intervals...so much fun when you are exhausted lol), then an 18mi Z1/2 brick run. I had to mentally prepare for this all day on Fri because it really intimidated me - I was nervous about running even longer than last week on Fri/Sat, then going out for another 100 miler on Sun. I had to really stay on top of my nutrition on the run, and I went through a TON of water - I was so nervous about getting dehydrated (drank about 72oz). Another long run on the IM course - getting to know every inch of the route! This took so much out of me mentally - I knew it was going to be tough, but damn. Exhausted. I was thrilled with my run though - only stopped once (to fill up my water) and managed just under a 9:00 pace! I'll take it.
My legs actually felt ok the 1st 20mi or so, and I was kind of thinking "What's going on?! Why aren't my legs DEAD?". Lol. (Yes, I really do have conversations with myself like this on these long, solo rides - what else are you going to do when you're out there for 6hrs by yourself? Haha!) I was just waiting for them to give out on me. Miles 10-20 ended up being super WINDY! I couldn't even get into aero because I couldn't control my bike, scary! Then things settled down a bit and I got into a nice rhythm. The miles were rolling by and I still felt strong.
I made it to mile 76 before I had to stop for water. Loaded up on ice and water, had some Coke and was back on the road. Those few sips of Coke hit the spot! I think I was craving caffeine, yum :) Also helped settle my stomach a little bit. Nutrition plan seemed to be working, but I was anxious to be done. The good news - 100mi seemed like a LOT less than 116mi!!!! It was a hot day, tough in some spots due to the wind, but I was thrilled with my ride. My legs showed up and I wasn't in as much pain as last weekend. 101mi total. Then I went out for a quick 2mi run. I started out thinking "Just try to get in at least a half mile", and I was surprised again at how good I felt on the run. The body is truly amazing sometimes!
So happy I made it through these last few days of training! I have been mentally preparing for the next few days too - Tue-Fri look to be TOUGH. I HAVE to stay in the game mentally, or else my body doesn't stand a chance!
Next weekend, Justin and I are racing the Boulder Peak Tri - an olympic distance race. I won't be tapered AT ALL, but I am looking forward to it anyway! It will be good overall "race" practice before the Ironman.
Hardest workout this week: Sun's 101/2 brick
Milestone this week: solid long runs & rides!
